Some rules: Part 1 Capturing and such

For those of you who don’t know the rules of Go or what I’m even talking about, this post is for you.
I’m stealing this all from the best Go website out there for people wanting to learn how to play.

There are two players: Black and White

You play on a 19×19 grid wooden board like the one below.

You place stones on the intersections (or points) not in the squares.

Players alternate turns placing one stone per turn. Once a stone is placed it can’t be removed unless it is captured (see below)

Black always plays first (because black is rawrsome)

If a stone or a group of stones is completely surrounded, those stones are captured.

Now to test out my shiny new flash based GOswf go board =)

Heidelberg Go Club

Today I journeyed for a good hour or so down crooked streets and confusing highways to find the Heidelberg Go Club that is part of the German go Association. I was excited to see they had six players there tonight, everyone was nice, spoke English and it was awesome to play some games on a real board with real stones instead of on KGS where I’ve spent most of my time.

I played two teaching games against their strongest player at 8 stones. I’m pretty sure he let me win both times so i would come back =).

In the mean time i’m on KGS in the The Randomness room solving (or rather, watching other people solve) tsumego.

More detailed posts to come. Seriously. =)

Go

If you’ve been wondering where I’ve dropped off the face of the earth to, then I appreciate your concern.

I would like to blame my absence on work, but the amount of freetime I have is still similar despite it being busy around the office. I probably could blame it on how we’ve started waking up at 6AM again to do PT but that would sound like complaining.

I’ve also been dreadfully sick for the last week also delaying this post.

But yes, please prepare yourselves for this to pretty much shift from 30 or 40 things to…a couple of things but mainly about Go. =)

If you don’t know what on earth I’m talking about it might be a good idea to visit this page: http://senseis.xmp.net/?Go

Also my family is in England right now having a blast visiting grandad and gradma. Make sure you check out Bex’s blog for that fun stuff =).
